The former US Ambassador to New Zealand is in no hurry to get back into politics, saying recent events have left him "disgusted".

Scott Brown was appointed by former Donald Trump in 2017. A former Senator, Brown endorsed the controversial former reality TV star in 2016 when his candidacy was still seen as a joke by many. As Ambassador, Brown defended some of the former President's views, such as keeping colonial statues in place and challenging the results of the 2020 election in the courts

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused nearly 6.9 million deaths across the world, more than double the number officially recorded, a new analysis from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) estimated.

Deaths go unreported as most countries only record those that occur in hospitals or of patients with a confirmed infection, the report showed.

Three political parties believe "genocide" is underway in China's Xinjiang region but had to settle to agreeing to watered-down concern in Parliament on Wednesday.

In a Parliamentary debate on Wednesday afternoon, Brooke van Velden of ACT, Golriz Ghahraman of the Greens and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer of the Māori Party each suggested genocide was underway against the Uighur people in China's Xinjiang province.

China has lashed out after New Zealand's Parliament declared "severe human rights abuses" are occurring there against the Uighur minority, saying it will "harm the mutual trust" between the countries.

Parliament yesterday unanimously supported a motion to declare it was "gravely concerned about the severe human rights abuses taking place against Uighurs and other ethnic and religious minorities in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region".

China "indefinitely" suspended on Thursday all activity under a China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue, its state economic planner said, the latest setback for their strained relations.

"Recently, some Australian Commonwealth Government officials launched a series of measures to disrupt the normal exchanges and cooperation between China and Australia out of Cold War mindset and ideological discrimination," China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a statement on the decision.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern isn't surprised by China's response to the New Zealand Parliament declaring that "severe human rights abuses" are occurring in Xinjiang.

MPs on Wednesday afternoon unanimously agreed to a motion expressing grave concern about the abuses reported to be underway in China against the Uighur minority. The ACT Party-backed motion originally said a "genocide" was happening, but that term was removed after deliberations with the Labour Party, ACT says.
