PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 23, 2021) The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83) conducts a Replenishment at Sea with the New Zealand oiler HMNZS Aotearoa. Howard is assigned to Commander, Task Force (CTF) 71/Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, the Navy’s largest forward-deployed DESRON and the U.S. 7th Fleet’s principal surface force. New Zealand's Government has issued a statement expressing deep concern over rioting and unrest in the Solomon Islands, but saying no requests for assistance have yet been received.
Police were overrun last night in the Solomon Islands capital Honiara as people swarmed into town in defiance of a 36-hour lockdown.

A Chinese spy ship entered waters in New Zealand’s economic zone, after spending time near Australia.
A spokesperson for the Australian Defence Force confirmed a ship belonging to the People’s Liberation Army operated off Australia’s east coast in August of this year.

Rocket Lab, the space company founded by Kiwi Peter Beck, has announced it will try and catch a rocket booster in mid-air as it returns to Earth using a helicopter.
The company hopes by doing so, it will allow its Electron orbital-class small rocket to launch more frequently and lower overall launch costs.

Judith Collins may be backing Christopher Luxon as the next leader of the National Party, but her endorsement likely holds little sway with her caucus colleagues after her recent actions, one political commentator says.

Rapid antigen tests (RATs) are nowhere near as accurate as traditional RT-PCR tests when it comes to detecting the virus behind COVID-19 but they have their place, Kiwi scientists behind a new study say.
The Government announced on Thursday an end to its year-and-a-half-long ban on point-of-care RATs. Associate MInister of Health Ayesha Verrall said while we were trying to eliminate the virus "the cost of missing a case was too high", so the Government wanted every test to be via the ultra-accurate but slow RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, or PCR), a type of nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT).
