A political pundit says overall, the current Labour Government isn't open and transparent - despite portraying itself as being so.

Political commentator Ben Thomas' comments come after a Radio New Zealand report earlier this week revealed that despite the Government saying before election 2020 it wouldn't give mining giant Rio Tinto a subsidy to prevent its Tiwai Point smelter from closing, it offered to cough up millions of dollars just months later.

Facebook is starting to warn some users they might have seen "extremist content" on the social media platform, the company said this week.

Screenshots shared on Twitter showed a notice asking "Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist?" and another that alerted users "you may have been exposed to harmful extremist content recently." Both included links to "get support."

Hospitals across the country are overrun with sick kids this winter. 

The spike in illness is being linked to outbreaks of various bugs, including a respiratory virus pushing emergency departments to the brink. 

Waitakere Hospital in Auckland is one of many seeing a surge in sickness this winter.

A local government council in Melbourne has moved to ban cats from straying from their properties under a new cat curfew law which comes into effect on October 1.

The Knox City Council made the move under its Domestic Animal Management Plan 2017-2021, which it said was supported by 85 per cent of people surveyed, according to Nine News.

New Zealand risks giving China coercive power over its economy, according to an American general and former US national security advisor.

General H.R. McMaster, who served as President Donald Trump's national security advisor, said New Zealanders often talked about not wanting to be caught in the middle of a scrap between America and China. The real choice for New Zealand, however, was between "sovereignty and servitude", he said.
