Security Intelligence Service spies have discovered a New Zealander covertly gathering information for a foreign intelligence agency.

The person has been using both "overt and covert" methods to collect information about people in New Zealand who a foreign state believes are dissidents, according to the Security Intelligence Services (SIS).

A poverty advocacy group is disappointed after several landlords joked about poisoning squatters in a property investors Facebook group. 

A woman, who wished to remain anonymous, sent Newshub screenshots of the comments. She joined the group to get advice about buying her first home but said she was "appalled" by the attitudes towards renters.

Landlords were taken aback earlier this week when the Government announced they would no longer be able to deduct interest payments from rental incomes to reduce their tax liability.

But it's not a policy that's come right out of the blue, having been phased in over the past four years in the UK.

This week, in favourable sea conditions and 250 nautical miles southeast of Tonga, the crew of HMNZS Aotearoa retrieved a Deep Ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) buoy that had been drifting since it broke its mooring in December.

The buoy was part of a network managed by the National Emergency Management Agency that provides tsunami monitoring and detection coverage for New Zealand and the southwest Pacific.

COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins says they can't force people to take the jab, but nor is it acceptable to have unvaccinated people working in New Zealand's main protection against the virus ravaging other parts of the world.

Only one in 10 Dudenites are using the COVID Tracer app when they're out and about, a "disturbingly low" percentage according to researchers.

And a third of venues aren't getting anyone to scan in at all, many of them bars - a high-risk setting for COVID-19 transmission if there was an outbreak.

The Government on Tuesday announced new caps on how much a buyer can spend on their first home and still qualify for a First Home Loan and First Home Grant. 

According to Housing Minister Megan Woods, the new caps are based on the median figure in the lower-quartile of recent sales - suggesting the bottom eighth of properties would qualify.
