MetService is continuing to warn parts of the South Island to be ready for severe thunderstorms and heavy rain on Thursday afternoon and evening, with a potential for "damaging hail" to fall in some areas.
A weather radar picked up sever thunderstorms near Waikouati just after 2pm, causing a severe weather warning for Waitaki and Dunedin.

China will take "drastic measures" if Taiwan makes moves towards formal independence, a Beijing official has warned, adding that Taiwan's so-called provocations and outside meddling could intensify next year.
China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory and in the past two years has stepped up military and diplomatic pressure to assert its sovereignty claim, fuelling anger in Taipei and concern in Washington.

The Ministry of Health warns an Omicron case has been active in the community - including visiting multiple locations in Auckland's CBD.
The person, who is fully vaccinated, had previously returned three negative tests for COVID-19 while completing their seven days of managed isolation at a facility in Auckland. They were then allowed to leave to complete their final three days in self-isolation.
