Police in the Solomon Islands say they’ll be taking a “zero-tolerance” policy to any violence as the country’s parliament sits for the first time since last year’s deadly riots.

The November unrest in Honiara was partly seen as a response to China’s growing influence in the country, following the Government’s move in 2019 to sever ties with Taiwan and align with China.

Economic fallout from the war in Ukraine is already being felt in New Zealand, with soaring fuel and food prices, a rising New Zealand dollar and widespread supply chain disruption, with worse expected in the coming months.

Chris Edwards​, who is managing director of international air and sea freight logistics business Go Logistics, says supply chain disruption is even worse than when Covid-19 first hit.

Yesterday the alarming news broke that the Solomon Islands is planning to sign a security agreement with the People’s Republic of China, opening the way for a permanent military base and intelligence listening posts. The new agreement has implications for the security of the whole of the Pacific.

A Russian general has been killed in a strike near the southern city of Kherson in Ukraine after gloating the war would be over within hours.

Lt Gen Yakov Rezantsev - who was the commander of Russia's 49th combined army - was reportedly killed during a Ukrainian strike on the Chornobaivka airbase near Kherson.

Rockets struck the outskirts of the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Saturday for what appeared to be the first time since Russia's invasion, and Russian forces took control of a town where workers at the defunct Chernobyl nuclear plant live.

Intense fighting raged in several parts of Ukraine, suggesting there will be no swift let-up in the month-old war, and US President Joe Biden called Russia's Vladimir Putin a "butcher" after meeting Ukrainian refugees in Poland.
