Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to step back from royal duties has renewed calls for New Zealand to become a republic.  

The New Zealand Republic Organisation (NZRO), a campaign group dedicated to bringing independence to New Zealand, says the recent controversy is a good reason to bring discussions to the forefront.

Green Party co-leader James Shaw clashed with media personality Sean Plunket during an interview in which the radio host questioned new resourcing for teaching climate change in schools. 

Plunket, host of Magic Talk, said he was concerned the syllabus would leave no room for students to question or debate the human impact of climate change.

Simon Bridges fears the police are being influenced by politicians and is urging the Police Commissioner to "guard against politicisation" of the police force. 

The leader of the Opposition was responding to news that a right-wing activist's Auckland home was raided last week by half a dozen police officers over suspicion he held an illegal firearm.

New Zealand's political system has been described by a top spy as "compromised" and that its Five Eyes membership is "on the edge of viability" because of Chinese influence.  

The senior intelligence official, who has not been named, told the Financial Times New Zealand has a "supine" attitude to China and suggested it could cost New Zealand its place in the Five Eyes intelligence network.

More than 4800 people have signed a petition calling for koalas to be introduced to New Zealand in the wake of devastating wildfires in Australia, but experts say there are other ways to support the stricken species.

Millions of animals have been impacted by the wildfires currently raging across the continent and there are concerns for how the remaining ones will manage given the loss of vegetation.
