The Ministry of Health is scrambling to find out whether New Zealand will be affected by new vaccine restrictions put in place by the European Union (EU).
The EU has hit pause on Covid-19 vaccine exports for two distributors, in a move labelled “concerning” but not surprising by one clinical microbiologist.
In a bid to ensure access to vaccines within Europe, the union has introduced a measure requiring exports to be authorised by member states before being shipped out.

An island 200 kilometres off the coast of China looms as the biggest international test of the Biden administration and Beijing’s relationship with the world. Characterised by its liberal democracy, resilient economy and the existential threat of invasion, Taiwan has lived under a cloud for more than half a century.
Its existence has seen Taiwanese and Chinese diplomats come to blows over a cake decorated with a Taiwan flag in Fiji, a Perth theatre forced to apologise to Chinese officials over a diplomatically sensitive performance and Qantas remove Taiwan from its list of country destinations.

China is calling on Australia to "heed the constructive voices from people with vision" after New Zealand Trade Minister Damien O'Connor suggested our trans-Tasman partner practice "more diplomacy" with the Chinese.
O'Connor this week found himself in "diplomatic doo-doo", as one critic described it, after telling an American television outlet how Australia could develop its relationship with China. While New Zealand signed a free trade agreement with China this week, relations between Australia and the Chinese are at an all-time low.

China said Friday it will no longer recognise the British National Overseas passport as a valid travel document or form of identification amid a bitter feud with London over a plan to allow millions of Hong Kong residents a route to residency and eventual citizenship.
The announcement by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian on Friday throws up new uncertainty around the plan just hours after the UK said it would begin taking applications for what are called BNO visas beginning late Sunday.
