Wearable Watches

Brand: Model - Movement

Samsung: Galaxy Watch Active2 - Digital Smart

I got this for work as I use to work in a noisy workshop and couldn't hear my phone when the boss rang so the vibration on the wrist alerted me to messages and phone calls on my phone. It also tracked my steps and health heart rate etc (which now I don't really bother as much).I seldomly wear this watch anymore.

Fossil: Coachman Chronograph - Quartz Chronograph Movement

Fossil watches, while perhaps not boasting the most refined movements or impeccable alignment, played a pivotal role in reigniting my enthusiasm for wristwatches. Despite any shortcomings, this watch acted as a gateway back into the world of horology for me. This particular timepiece, intended as an everyday companion and resilient enough to withstand the rigors of daily wear, has become more than just a functional accessory. It symbolizes a return to appreciating the craftsmanship and artistry of analog watches, serving as a reminder that beauty and utility can often be found in the most unexpected places. So while it may not be the epitome of haute horology, its significance in reigniting my passion for watches is truly invaluable and will most likely always stay in my collection.

Belmoto - Trackday SBB - Matte Black - Seiko VK64 Chronograph Hybrid Meca-Quartz Movement

Belmoto, a distinguished sub-brand under the Magrette umbrella, holds a special place among my collection of watches. Its allure lies not only in its association but also in its distinctive functionality. The peculiar feature where the second hand solely engages during chronograph activation adds an intriguing layer of complexity to its character. Moreover, its thoughtful design includes a secondary crown dedicated to adjusting the internal bezel and a gracefully positioned date complication at the 6 o'clock mark, enhancing both its aesthetics and usability.

Opting to retain its original leather strap, I've found this timepiece to be versatile, effortlessly transitioning between formal occasions and everyday wear. Its presence in my rotation isn't just routine; it's a testament to its enduring appeal and the pleasure it brings with each glance at its meticulously crafted face.

Seiko:  5 Pepsi Auto - 4R36-07G0

The backstory behind this watch holds a significant chapter of my life. During my time in the Navy, I owned a Seiko timepiece resembling this one, which unfortunately fell victim to theft. However, fate had a way of bringing a modern iteration of that cherished watch back into my life.

The moment I spotted this watch for sale, memories flooded back, and I knew it was destined to be mine. Since then, it has seamlessly integrated into my daily rotation, becoming a steadfast companion on my wrist. Its classic Pepsi-style bezel and the practical day-date complication positioned elegantly at the 3 o'clock mark are constant reminders of its timeless appeal.

There's something inherently special about this watch, beyond its aesthetics and functionality. It represents resilience, a tangible link to my past experiences, and a symbol of moving forward. With each glance at its dial, I'm reminded of the journey that brought it into my possession and the memories it holds. It's more than just a timepiece; it's a cherished memento of my Navy days and a testament to the enduring bond between a person and their watch.

Casio: W-59-1V - Casio 590 Digital Module

It's pure nostalgia encapsulated in a timepiece. Released alongside the widely known Casio F-91W in July 1989, this watch holds a special place in my heart solely for nostalgic reasons. While I don't adorn it frequently, each time I do, it's like stepping back into the past and reliving the memories of my very first watch.

The subtle giggle that escapes me while wearing it is a testament to the flood of emotions and reminiscences it evokes, reminding me of simpler times and cherished moments from years gone by.

Beaufort: Seatrekker Green - Swiss Made STP 1-11, Automatic

Yet another fascinating addition from a Kiwi microbrand. What caught my eye immediately was the captivating color scheme and its retro-inspired design. Unfortunately, during the last release, I had to pass due to unexpected shifts in my employment situation and I missed out. But when the opportunity presented itself once more, I eagerly jumped on board without hesitation. This piece is regularly on my wrist and is a joy to wear.

Belmoto: Tourer Rose Gold - Miyota 9015 with hacking seconds

A distinguished offshoot of Magrette, swiftly climbing the ranks to claim a top spot in my watch collection.

Sure to take center stage as my go-to dress watch, this timepiece closely resembles the Belmoto track day model, lacking the chronograph function, however boasting a luscious rose gold finish.

Balancing elegance and athleticism, this watch strikes the perfect chord as my dress companion, blending sophistication with a hint of sporty charm.

Komrade New Zealand: Urban Diver Mk2 - Japanese NH36A

A spunky kiwi micro brand, shaking things up as they transform into KTW - Komrade Titanium Watches.

I snagged one of their snazzy end-of-line timepieces in a vibrant orange hue to make a statement. (Plus, it perfectly complements my workplace over at Mitre10 Mega, where orange and black reign supreme!) What caught my eye was the bold dial design, setting it apart from the ordinary. And let's not forget the unconventional chic dive rubber strap paired with a sophisticated metal bracelet, giving me endless style possibilities for any event.

Draken Watches: Tugela Red - Seiko NH35A automatic

Discovering my thriving collection of New Zealand micro brand watches. Draken Watches based in the picturesque town of Waipu, New Zealand, Draken Watches offers a captivating array of around five distinct styles, each with multiple dial and strap options to suit any taste.

One standout piece in my collection features a striking red bezel that boldly contrasts with its sleek black dial, creating a vibrant pop of color. To mix things up, I also snagged a black leather strap with red stitching. This extra strap provides a versatile alternative to the bracelet, letting me customize my watch to perfectly match any occasion.

Commemorative / Limited Edition Watches

Magrette: Moana Pacific Waterman GMT Titanium - Miyota 9075 automatic GMT with jumping local hour hand

This is my second so called real mechanical watch I bought and added to my collection. A Kiwi micro brand watch and is now one of my favorite watches. I have since put it on it's metal bracelet and this action has enhanced its elegance and look when worn. The two tone ceramic bezel gives it that classic look and has that sapphire crystal. This is a limited edition and only 300 were made in this run. This time piece is number 148 of 300. Whether they make another run of this model is unknown.

Komrade New Zealand: Palancar Reef Blue - ST1901 Movement

Komrade slowly rebranding to KTC Only two of these watches in each color were ever made, and I was lucky enough to snag one in dazzling blue. The Palancar Reef chronograph, with its shimmering blue dial, was crafted during the COVID lockdown.

Initially, 80 pieces in this color were planned, but rebranding halted production. This serendipitous twist means I now own an exceptionally rare and unique timepiece. Only 2 of these in this colour were ever made. (I have one and the owner has the other) and only 6 were made across the full colour range. It is the Palancar Reef, Blue from Komrade & Vanguard Watches who are a New Zealand micro watch brand. This is quite a large watch from lug to lug and just boarder line for my wrist and not only that this timepiece is the only manual wind watch I currently own the rest are automatic and or quartz.

I am reluctant to wear this piece because if I bash it, scratch it, or if I break it I can't replace it. That being said I does get wrist time when I know I am not going to knock it about.

Bradford Exchange: Peter Brock Commemorative Watch - Quartz

I scored this watch from a second-hand shop for about $120. It's a Peter Brock Commemorative Watch from the Bradford Exchange—a budget-friendly timepiece with a basic quartz movement and bracelet. Despite its battle scars, it's a tribute to Peter Brock, the legendary Australian race driver known as the "King of the Mountain" or simply "Brocky."

Back in the day, I was glued to the TV for the Bathurst 1000, the epic race around Mount Panorama, when Peter Brock was dominating the track. This watch brings back those electrifying memories. Although I don't wear it often (it needs a new battery), it still holds a special place in my collection.

Royal New Zealand Navy Commemorative Watch: - Seiko Automatic NH35A

I stumbled upon this gem on TradeMe and knew I had to have it. I was prepared to bid high than I got it for, but sticking to my budget was a nail-biting challenge. As a former member of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) for over 7 years, I've been an avid collector of various Royal New Zealand Navy memorabilia. This watch, featuring a quality Seiko movement and the Royal New Zealand Navy logo on the dial, was a must-have for my collection. I t has also been laser etched on the side with its number.

However it is a watch like my Komrade Palacar, one I love to wear but handle with extreme care to avoid any scratches or damage. This particular piece is even more special, being #1 out of only 50 ever made, so I’m extra cautious about when and where I wear it. However I do wish I could wear it more often.

Pulsar: 2020 Limited Edition Supercars - Seiko PT3A67X Chronograph Quartz

2020 Limited Edition each boasting a numbered case back in my case No. 0481/2020, a certificate of authenticity, and a deluxe presentation box. Featuring the iconic Supercars logo on both the dial and clasp, this timepiece is truly a collector's dream. Enduring depths of up to 100m, equipped with a 60-minute stopwatch, a reliable 24-hour hand, luminous hands, and hour markers for enhanced readability.

This timepiece is a tribute to both affordability and style, coming from a brand that’s been under Seiko's umbrella since 1978. Pulsar sits comfortably in the mid-range of Seiko's offerings, making it a solid choice for those who appreciate quality without breaking the bank.

For now, it's sporting one of my spare Magrette straps since the original one has seen better days. But even with the temporary band, it’s a showstopper! I snagged this gem from a friend online, and although it's another Quartz piece, it's actually quite impressive in its own right.

Prop & Costume Watches

Gearworks Grandeur Time Device: Cogsworth Classic - Steam

This is a pure prop and non-working watch, reserved solely for occasions when I'm fully decked out in my steampunk attire. It adds an authentic touch to the ensemble, completing the look with its intricate design and vintage aesthetic.

This timepiece serves as more than just a mere accessory; it's a carefully chosen prop meticulously selected to complement my full steampunk attire. While it may not function as a conventional watch, its presence is indispensable when I immerse myself in the fantastical world of steam-powered gadgets and Victorian-inspired fashion.

Wearing this non-working watch adds an extra layer of authenticity to my costume, evoking the spirit of a bygone era where innovation and imagination reigned supreme. Its intricate details and vintage charm capture the essence of steampunk culture, transporting me to an alternate reality where creativity knows no bounds.

Each time I don this prop, it serves as a reminder of the boundless creativity and ingenuity of the steampunk community, sparking conversations and inspiring awe wherever I go. It's more than just an accessory; it's a symbol of my passion for storytelling and my love for embracing the extraordinary.

Guess: Saddle Up - Quartz

I stumbled upon this gem at a second-hand store, priced at a mere $25. Its square-shaped dial, coupled with a simplistic and unassuming face, immediately caught my attention. The wide leather strap added a touch of comfort to its allure. However, it's undeniable that this watch falls into the category of plain and basic quartz timepieces, lacking both lumination and a date function or any complications for that matter, and I have my doubts about its water resistance capabilities.

Nevertheless, at such an affordable price point, it serves its purpose perfectly as part of my steampunk formal dress ensemble. This piece, while not a daily companion, adds a distinctive flair to my costume, making it the ideal accessory for those rare occasions when I delve into the realm of steampunk fashion.
