Had a fun time finding this café. We were aiming for Kiki Beware café on George Street, but when we got there it felt quite unwelcoming, no eye contact or acknowledgement, pretty much only menu service and a few sad looking slices under a cover so we went outside as I had seen a sign for another café down an alley.

Name: RdC Espresso
Address: 346 George Street, Central Dunedin, Dunedin 9016

I don’t know how keen I would be to go down the alley in winter dark but fine on a Spring Saturday morning. RdC is open Monday – Saturday 7am-5pm so good for getting to. When we found the café down the alley, we were pleasantly surprised. A cheerful greeting and suggestions on the scone and other options available.

Nighthawk went for a cheese scone and I went for a kiwifruit something muffin which was very tasty. Two cheese rolls for $5, so it would be rude not to add them on. With two large flat whites it came to about $25.

Nighthawk was very impressed with his scone, which I would quibble over it being a scone – it looked more like a bread / cake consistency, but if it tastes good, you can call it whatever you want. It came split and toasted which was a nice touch.

The cheese rolls were nicely toasted and had something hard to identify as a nice taste, but my final decision was that it was gherkin that was very finely diced. Something to keep in mind next time I make them.

Even though we requested a large flat white, (or as Nighthawk put it, a bucket) the coffees were what I would call a small size, but with an extra shot in it that made it a bit strong for my taste.

The furnishing was retro with lino tables and Nighthawk and I sat on an old sofa (that was very hard to get out of) and read Tintin books while we waited for the coffee to come. We would probably meet up with friends here and if I was in town for a days shopping, would possibly come down the alley.

The food was tasty and good value and there was a quirky atmosphere. Only down point was getting parking in town.
