This is a fairly new (ish) cafe that we have been meaning to try for a little bit now ever since Xaria found out about it a while back.
Name: Oaken
Address: 538a Great King Street, Dunedin North, Dunedin 9016
Website: https://www.facebook.com/OakenOtepoti/
We found a park out the front which I believe is their visitor car park that has a limited number of parks. We wandered in and proceeded to look over the cabinet serve over food. They have a pretty good selection, however today was cheese rolls and coffee.
They have a limited seats out the front and a couple table and chairs downstairs with the bulk of the seating upstairs. While it was going to be a nice day it was still a little chilly being a mid winters day.

We found a seat looking out the window and down onto the one way... I have no idea why I chose to sit there. In hind site the heater was a couple of tables back. The place was a little cool not freezing but enough for use to actually notice. This could be because we were early and they have only just starting to warm the seating area up etc. But I can see on a nice summers morning the sun streaming in those big windows.
Our coffees came first and pretty quickly our cheese rolls. I had a standard cheese roll while Xaria had a corn and cheese roll. They came with a small tube of butter each that we spread on to and waited for it to melt through. I thought my cheese roll was pretty good, pretty much your run of the mill cheese roll, not in my top tier but not in my bottom tier of goodness. Xaria on the other hand said hers was Okay, but couldn't really taste the cheese as much as she would like. But she also pointed out she is not sure if that is just her recovering from the flu she had just a week a go.
The coffees we ok as well. Over all pretty friendly service and not to bad prices. The double Cheese roll was only about $6.00 most other places are up around the $7.00 for a large double roll.
Oaken did have that cafe atmosphere to it, and would be a place to meet up with your friends and have a good ole chin wag. The only thing I really commented on was they needed to turn the heat up little. However like we said we were early maybe the place didn't have a chance to warm up yet. But you could be warming the place up while you are preparing the food.
The prices weren't to bad, pretty good service and with friendly staff and we would happily visit here again for a coffee etc.
