We have been to Alto Cafe in Mornington however that was before officially doing our cafescapade.  We both remembered we enjoyed what ever we had the last time and if I remember correctly I had a sausage roll and coffee.

Name: Alto Cafe
Address: 32 Mailer Street, Mornington, Dunedin 9011
Hours: Monday – Thursday: 6:30am – 4pm, Friday: 6:30am – 5pm, Saturday & Sunday: 8:30am – 4pm
Website: https://www.altocafe.nz

The Alto Cafe situated on the corner of Mailer Street and Lawrence Street in Mornington in an older Art Deco building just adds to the overall cafe atmosphere.

We went around 9am for our morning brunch, coffee, however Morning needs better parking. However we did find one slightly further down the road which was no problem until, just at the door of the cafe Xaria realises she has forgotten her mask. So off she wandered back to the car to get her mask... me being me... I just laughed as we reminded each other before we left making sure we had a mask. tongue-out

On second attempt we strolled in and looked over the selection of the cabinet food. There was a pretty good selection, and both cheese scones as well as savory scones, sausage rolls and cheese rolls. Oh so today I had the tough decisions... part of it was easy sausage roll but do I try a cheese roll or do I get the scone, because they both looked pretty good.

Xaria got savory scone and a cheese roll and her standard coffee, I on the other hand tossing up between the two whilst making my order joking with the waitress that a decision would be good. Sausage roll and savory scone it was and coffee. I mean coffee is the main reason we go to cafe's right... right?

Finding a table by the window with the morning sun streaming in setting off transitional glasses, but we were warm on the mild winters day. But that could also be that we were also sitting underneath one of the heaters as well. We noted on the way in they had a couple of outside tables and chairs with blankets. So on a day like to day where it is sunny but only a mild day the blankets would come in handy.

Savory Scones - Alto Cafe
Savory Scone gooey goodness

The scones came pretty quickly with decent dollop of butter. We both have to admit the scones were bigger than we first thought and yes, mighty fine. The dollop of cream cheese on top was also a nice touch.  Our coffees came next and just as I was finishing my scone my sausage roll and Xaria cheese roll arrived. I joked that I had to get every crumb of the scone before the waitress took my plate... laughing

The sausage roll was as good as I remembered from my last visit. It came with a side of sauce/relish that is made in house that the sell in bottles if you wish to have some for home. Xaria mentioned that her cheese roll was up there and a decent size.

Sausage roll with relish and a small side salad.

Alto Cafe definitely has that cafe feel and atmosphere to it. It is one of those places that you would meet up with your friends that you haven't seen in a while sit there drink coffee have a bite to eat and chin wag for a while without the feeling of being rushed.

Alto has the nice little touches like the blankets for the outdoor seating if needed as well as we also noted that there were a couple infant highchairs that could be used as well.

It was pretty busy when we arrived but not overly rushed off their feet. This can be a double edge sword, a good sign that it is popular, however if overly busy things take a bit longer to receive your order. The staff were pretty friendly as I joked about a little with them here and there. The price was up there but not overly expensive at around $38.80 however as the saying goes you get what you pay for. The scones were larger than we first thought, and darn good, and the sausage roll was up there as well. Over all we enjoyed Alto Cafe and would happily go back for another visit.
