Gone are the days of the heavy battleship and cruisers, with guns, guns, guns to bear. In the age of missiles do main guns still have a purpose on a naval vessel. The New Zealand Defence Force has spent millions buying a Manawatū farm to expand its Ohakea air base.

The $6.4 million purchase price for the 99ha farm was about three times the average per hectare sale price of farmland in the area.

The New Zealand Defence Force has been ordered to pay a former employee $25,000 after a flawed dismissal process.

The Employment Relations Authority in Wellington was told former human resource site lead Juliette Darnley worked with the force between July 31, 2017, until June 24, 2019.
