In a transformative step for New Zealand’s tactical airlift capabilities, Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has delivered the first of five C-130J Super Hercules aircraft to the New Zealand Ministry of Defence and New Zealand Defence Force. This significant milestone was celebrated during a ceremony held at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Marietta, Georgia, on August 8, 2024. This delivery marks a pivotal upgrade for the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), which has relied on its C-130H fleet for nearly six decades.
A Leap Forward in Tactical Airlift
The C-130J Super Hercules is renowned for its advanced capabilities, representing one of the most sophisticated configurations of the Super Hercules ever produced. The new aircraft will be operated by crews from 40 Squadron, based at RNZAF Base Auckland, Whenuapai. This new fleet will not only enhance New Zealand’s tactical airlift capabilities but also improve its operational reach and efficiency, addressing contemporary military and humanitarian needs.

Lockheed Martin’s Rod McLean, Vice President and General Manager of Air Mobility & Maritime Missions, emphasised the strategic importance of the C-130J. He noted that New Zealand’s C-130s have consistently been a “global force for good,” playing crucial roles in humanitarian missions and international military operations. The new C-130J fleet will continue this legacy while offering enhanced capabilities, greater reach, and improved performance in complex operational environments.
Strategic Modernisation and Collaboration
The modernisation of New Zealand’s airlift fleet began in 2020 with the decision to replace the aging C-130Hs with five C-130J-30 variants. This procurement was facilitated through a Foreign Military Sale with the U.S. Air Force. The transition to the new fleet has been managed by a collaborative project team comprising personnel from the New Zealand Ministry of Defence, the New Zealand Defence Force, the U.S. Air Force, and Lockheed Martin. This joint effort underscores the commitment to ensuring a smooth integration process and effective operational readiness.
