Newshub understands the Government has significantly wound back its proposed hate speech laws as they were too controversial to be palatable.
The proposals by former Justice Minister Kris Faafoi included new penalties, new definitions, and new minority groups to be covered by hate speech laws.

But Newshub understands Cabinet has now significantly watered down what was a very wide-ranging definition to be much narrower.
