The Southern Scooter Challenge is described as the coldest, longest, and most gruelling scooter race in the country.

And this year one man is taking it to the next level. He's riding his 50cc scooter from Christchurch to Bluff and then up to Queenstown - all to raise awareness for prostate cancer.

As he puts his bunny helmet on, Harvey Throttlestop is off to a shaky start.

His Honda's top speed is 50km/h - and that's on a "good day". Despite this, he's heading to the bottom of the South Island for the Southern Scooter Challenge.

Beginning in Oxford, it'll take him three days and two nights just to get to the start line in Bluff in time for the weekend rally.

"I'm trying to avoid State Highway One so I'll be going down the middle of Otago," he says.

At 193cm tall and dressed as a bunny, he's certain to attract plenty of attention.

"[I'm] not entirely sure that going through Central Otago dressed as a rabbit is a wise choice but anything I can do to heighten the awareness," he says.

He's riding to raise awareness for prostate cancer and hospice in Southland.

"It's 1400 kilometres on a 50cc scooter with an average speed of 30kms an hour," he says.

He'll join a hundred others in the ride. And with a marathon seven days at 50km/h - it's certainly no rabbit race.
