Two people who flew from Auckland to Fiji have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Fijian Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) announced the two new border cases on Sunday. They are a 49-year-old woman and a 58-year-old woman who arrived on flight NZ952 on December 24.

Both people tested positive during routine exit testing at a managed isolation facility in Nadi.

"The individuals were safely and hygienically transferred to the isolation ward at the Lautoka hospital in accordance with the standard protocol for confirmed cases. They were asymptomatic and well since arrival in Fiji," a statement from MHMS says.

The Air New Zealand flight the two passengers travelled on - NZ952 - departed Auckland International Airport at 9:49am and arrived in Nadi at 12:30pm.

It is currently unclear when and how the two women became infected.

New Zealand's Ministry of Health and Air New Zealand have been contacted for comment.

Fiji has recorded 55 total cases since the virus was first detected there last year on March 19, with the last 34 cases found in border quarantine.
