While I know this is an older article there are a few things to point out and with the DCP 2019 a few things have been decided.
"apparently no consideration is being given to acquiring large, remotely piloted aircraft like the MQ-4C Triton, although smaller UAVs for coastal patrols are probably on the table."
According to the Defence Capability Plan, 2019 UAV's will be acquired freeing and allowing the P-8A Poseidon to do the long-range and any international operations with our allies. The type of UAV is not known though it will most likely be long-range with maritime sensors.
As above the P-8A Poseidon has been chosen to replace the P-3K2's. However only 4 to replace 6 P-3. But as above getting the UAV is to supplement the P-8A's. This will allow both Kiwi and Aussie air forces to work closer, maintenance, parts, and inter-operability. The RNZAF P-8A Poseidon's will able to slip into our allied operations.
The final note here is the replacement of the C-130H's and as we now know the RNZAF will be getting five C-130J-30 Super Hercules and, to be honest, there was really no other choice. The C-2 from Japan is still really going through testing before being any orders should be made same as the Embraer KC-390. The A-400M is well more expensive and has had a rough start. However, personally, it would have been nice to see a couple in Kiwi colours.
No decision as of yet has been made on the replacements of the B-757's.
