Indonesia's Anak Krakatau volcano erupts
The Indonsian volcano of Anak Krakatau has erupted, the Indonesian Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation reports.
The eruption started on Friday at 10:35pm (local time).
CNN Indonesia reports that many residents in Jakarta and West Java heard loud thunder-like sounds on the early morning on Saturday, believed to be from the volcanic activity on Anak Krakatau.
The eruption was thought to be the biggest on Anak Krakatau since the violent partial collapse of the volcano in December 2018 which triggered a devastating tsunami.
The eruption is believed to be the biggest on Anak Krakatoa since 2018 when a deadly tsunami was triggered.
Volcano tracking website Volcano Discovery says it was a "large magmatic eruption" with "high-level ash" and plume reaching up to 15 kilometres in the air.
