New Zealand is set to experience drier and calmer weather than normal, according to WeatherWatch.

The North Island and parts of the South Island will feel warm sub-tropical northerly-quarter winds from Friday to Saturday, followed by a brief phase of cooler and windier weather on Sunday and Monday.

"It appears to be a strong, solid, high," WeatherWatch says.

"In 10 days time high pressure may be still in the New Zealand area, but at the same time low pressure will be growing north in the tropics. This may encourage a new easterly flow in the upper half of the North Island."

WeatherWatch said it is worth watching the South Pacific cyclone season coming in around February and March, but for now increased high pressure looks to be the main highlight of our January weather pattern.
