An Invercargill police officer has been injured in a pursuit involving a man accused of attempted murder.

A man was found with an apparent gunshot wound on Brown St about 7:30pm on Saturday. He remains in Southland Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Police tried to arrest a 29-year-old on Monday in relation to the firearms incident but during a short pursuit, an officer was knocked to the ground by the fleeing vehicle and suffered minor injuries.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Invercargill District Court on Tuesday morning, said Southland acting area commander Inspector Jon Bisset.

An investigation was ongoing and further charges may be laid

"The man was arrested shortly before 7pm this evening [Monday], following a brief pursuit in Invercargill."

An investigation was ongoing and further charges may be laid, Insp Bisset said.

"A vehicle belonging to the public also sustained minor damage after being struck by the offender's car. The occupant of the car was uninjured."

Insp Bisset acknowledged the incident had been "unsettling" for the community.

"We would like to thank residents for their cooperation and support as we worked to apprehend this offender."
