There was no escape for a 10-year-old boy repeatedly lured to isolated places and made to perform sexual acts on a man almost three decades his senior.
Robert James Clarke, 48, says he was sexually aroused by the boy and saw him as someone he could easily manipulate.
In the Palmerston North District Court on Friday, Clarke was sentenced to 12 months' home detention after he pleaded guilty to three charges of doing an indecent act with a young person.
The judge suppressed the pair's relationship and declined to read the victim impact statement, but he said the boy trusted and looked up to Clarke.
The first incident occurred in Pahīatua in early October 2008, when Clarke lured the boy into a room and locked the door behind him. He removed his pants and instructed the boy to play with his genitals.
