The team tasked with preventing obscene online content has been doubled with an increased focus on stamping out terrorist content - including the Christchurch video.

With a quick Google search and a few clicks, it's easy to find the horrific Christchurch shooting video. It's the same story with the manifesto, the URL flagrantly displaying the name of the accused.

"In New Zealand, in March, we saw the ease and speech with which an attack could be live-streamed," said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

A new measure from the Government is aiming to stop the digital spread, a team of 17 people tracking extremist content and attempting to take it down.

The Government is also looking at strengthening legislation, including the possible regulation of providers as part of the media.

The Islamic Federation is pleased with the announcement.

"Most common New Zealanders are fed up with the kind of information - violent content, terrorist content online... so any step to take that down is a very positive step," says Mustafa Farouk, President of The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand.

Police have already taken action to stop extremist content related to March 15.

Thirty-five people have been charged for sharing the video, 13 of which were located in Christchurch. Ten were referred to youth court.

"There are some platforms that simply may choose to ignore notices that come from New Zealand's jurisdiction," Ardern responded to concerns regarding the content being totally removed from the internet.

Asking internet providers to block certain websites is another option up the Government's sleeve.

"That's where we need to look at options like filters... something we already do for child exploitation and we are now exploring for terrorist and extremist content," says Ardern.

The Government will always be playing catch-up with extremist, graphic content on the internet. Technology is always evolving and so are methods for evading censorship.

However, this at least gives enforcement agencies a chance to stop some content coming from New Zealand - and to prosecute those sharing it.
