The Indonesian Government has imposed a total internet access shut down for mobile cellular networks in the Papua and West Papua provinces until further notice. This is an appalling attack on people’s right to freedom of expression.
Censorship is not the answer to escalating tension.
People must be able to share information and peacefully speak their minds. At the same time, they must be able to document and share evidence of abuses committed by security forces, particularly as Indonesian authorities are sending more security forces to the region.
Call on Indonesian President Widodo and Minister Rudiantara to restore internet access immediately.
