Kiwis will be waking up to a chilly start on Sunday, as a cold front makes its way north.

"Winter-like temperatures" hit on Saturday, first arriving in the South Island before heading to the North Island on Sunday.

MetService meteorologist April Clark said almost 10C temperature drops could be expected, with Napier falling from 23C on Saturday to 14C on Sunday.

"The front is expected to weaken as it moves over the upper North Island early Sunday, bringing a few showers. The South Island and lower North Island are looking to have a generally fine, and chilly start to Sunday," she said.

Auckland is expected to have a chilly wet start before heating up, peaking at 17C around 4:30pm from a low of 9C around 7am.

A small amount of rain is predicted for the morning, but it's expected to give way to mostly fine weather.

It's been a few days of cold across New Zealand, after Friday saw almost record-breaking lows in Wellington.

Upper Hutt experienced it's fourth coldest October temperature since records began in 1940 at the end of the week, hitting -2.8C.

The cold weather will give way to warmer temperatures for the second week of school holidays, although MetService said there could still be some trouble afoot.

"The changeable weather continues so those making outdoor plans for the final week of the school holidays, should keep an eye on the forecast to find their fine weather window."
