A would-be customer at an Auckland eatery was shocked when the establishment responded to her request for vegan food by telling her they could offer her "cardboard".

The woman, who Stuff has chosen not to name, approached HeadQuarters in Auckland's viaduct through Facebook, asking if they serve vegan food.

Their response made a mockery of her question.

"We can offer you the menu, it's cardboard, should taste like 97  per cent of vegan food, you could eat that maybe. We'll cut it in three if you'd like three courses," the restaurant replied.

Leo Molloy, owner of Headquarters, is a controversial figure in the Auckland restaurant scene.

They also offered water as an entree with a jug for a main, "frozen if you like solids".

But then came the clincher, a reference to the restaurant's pet food, which was also available.

"We have two pet rabbits, Pie and Stew, you could have some of their nuts and lettuce... it's all carbon neutral food."

Controversial owner Leo Molloy told Newshub the restaurant wasn't set up to cater to vegans but they would do their best if one did come in.

He also said he wasn't the person behind the message but wouldn't say who had written it.

It's not the first time Molloy has made headlines. In 2017, he blasted the choice of location for the America's Cup base as "constipated thinking".

Headquarters is located on Auckland's viaduct.

He has also sparked rivalries with other Auckland eateries over comments about their patrons.
