As if texting and driving wasn't dangerous enough, one woman has been filmed reading a book while commuting to the capital.

The footage supplied to Newshub was filmed between Lower Hutt and Wellington on Thursday morning, according to the motorist who sent it.

There's no specific law relating to reading a book while driving.

Police said while there's no specific law relating to reading a book while driving, getting pinged was still a possibility.

"Depending on the circumstances, this could lead to prosecution for other offences such as careless driving," said National Roading Policing Centre acting operations manager Snr Sgt Paul Simcox.

"When you are driving your focus should be on the road and getting everybody in your car to the destination safely."

Snr Sgt Simcox told Newshub that things can change in a split second.

He said people who aren't paying full attention to the road may not have time to react and avoid a crash.

"Nobody wants to share the road with a driver who isn't paying full attention."
