ANALYSIS: Only once in its history has America handed over a nuclear submarine propulsion plant, the crown jewels of military technology, to another country.

That was 63 years ago when America helped the Royal Navy to go nuclear. Now it will take that dramatic step again.

With the Afghanistan withdrawal allowing the US to sharpen its focus on the Indo Pacific, Dr Wayne Mapp considers New Zealand’s position in the context of an energised or expanded Quad grouping.

The end game in Afghanistan proved to be as traumatic as was ever feared. The sight of thousands of panicked Afghans at Kabul airport, with the ultimate denouement of ISIS-K terror bombings seemed a stark illustration of the impotence of the West. It was an ignominious end to the 20-year intervention by the US-led coalition, which at its peak involved more than 50 nations.

MELBOURNE, Australia — China has lashed out at plans by Australia to forge a closer alliance with the United States and the United Kingdom, which includes the sharing of nuclear-powered submarine technology. But other Indo-Pacific nations are reacting more cautiously.

Speaking during a news conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said the nuclear-powered submarine cooperation “has seriously undermined regional peace and stability, intensified the arms race and undermined international nonproliferation efforts.”

France plunged into an unprecedented diplomatic crisis with the United States and Australia on Friday after it recalled its ambassadors from both countries over a trilateral security deal which sank a $40 billion French-designed submarine contract.

The rare decision taken by French President Emmanuel Macron was made due to the seriousness of the matter, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a statement.

OPINION: When the grand new military alliance was announced between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States – dubbed Aukus – one name was missing its contribution to the acronym: New Zealand.

The real question is why the deal is not called NZAukus. In other words, why has New Zealand been left out in the cold on this new military hardware and defence co-operation deal. At its most basic, the answer is: nuclear. New Zealand has an anti-nuclear policy and, under the current Government, that will certainly not be revisited. Indeed, all parties in Parliament support this approach.
