Jacinda Ardern has promised "future evacuation" of New Zealanders and eligible Afghans who have not made it out, though she admits subsequent operations will "look different" due to allies withdrawing.

The Prime Minister made the promise on Friday after the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) was forced to abandon plans for two more evacuation flights, due to terrorist threats made by ISIS-K, an affiliate of Islamic State active in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

As the Delta outbreak continues to grow and New Zealand's vaccine rollout ramps up, there are questions around whether employers can fire people for refusing to get the jab.

Last month the Government expanded its mandatory vaccine requirements to include workers at ports and airports who are at the greatest risk of exposure to COVID-19.

At least 90 Afghan civilians and 12 members of the US military have been killed in twin suicide bombings at Kabul's international airport as foreign evacuation efforts continue.

The attack comes just a day after Western nations - including New Zealand - advised citizens and visa holders on the ground to avoid Hamid Karzai International Airport due to terrorism threats. The site has become the centre point of tensions in Afghanistan, with thousands of people flocking to it with hopes of getting on an evacuation aircraft out of the country, which recently fell to the Taliban.

There were at least two explosions near Kabul's airport amid a huge and chaotic evacuation effort from Afghanistan on Thursday, the Pentagon said, with civilians and US service members among the casualties of what was described as a "complex attack".

US officials said they were concerned that further attacks could occur at the airport following the twin blasts, which health officials have said killed at least 60 people. The Taliban earlier said at least 13 were dead, including children.

Another pandemic just as bad as COVID-19 is likely to happen within the lifetime of most people reading this article, US scientists say.

Since its discovery in China in late 2019, the SARS-CoV-2 virus has killed millions and infected hundreds of millions, and changed life as we know it. Excluding AIDS - which the World Health Organization classifies as a 'global epidemic' - COVID-19 is the worst pandemic since the Spanish Flu a century ago.
