The coronavirus that's ravaged the world in the past 18 months isn't the first to emerge from Asia and cause widespread illness.
There's evidence one "similar to COVID-19" tore through eastern Asia 20,000 years ago, according to a new study.
"The modern human genome contains evolutionary information tracing back tens of thousands of years, like studying the rings of a tree gives us insight into the conditions it experienced as it grew," said Kirill Alexandrov of the University of Queensland.

Chinese scientists mysteriously deleted data about the coronavirus' genetic sequence collected early in the pandemic, a virologist has discovered, suggesting the aim was to "obscure their existence".
Jesse Bloom - a virologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle - says he managed to recover the data from hidden files on Google Cloud, and they reveal the earliest infections picked up in Wuhan probably weren't among the first.

Russia said on Wednesday it had fired warning shots and dropped bombs in the path of a British warship to chase it out of waters Moscow claims in the Black Sea off the coast of the Crimea peninsula.
Britain rejected Russia's account of the incident, saying it believed any shots fired were a pre-announced Russian "gunnery exercise", and that no bombs had been dropped. But it confirmed that its destroyer, HMS Defender, had sailed through what it described as waters belonging to Ukraine.

Hong Kong's pro-democracy tabloid Apple Daily said it will print its last edition on Thursday, after a tumultuous year in which it was raided by police and its tycoon owner and other staff were arrested under a new national security law.
The end of the popular 26-year-old tabloid, which mixes pro-democracy discourse with racy celebrity gossip and investigations of those in power, has escalated alarm over media freedom and other rights in the Chinese-ruled city.
