China and Solomon Islands are set to sign off on a security deal that will see Chinese warships based in the Pacific and shift the balance of power in Australia’s region.
The agreement will give China the power to use its military to protect the safety of Chinese personnel and major projects in Solomon Islands and give Beijing a base for its navy less than 2000 kilometres off Australia’s coast.

The Australian government has been expressing concern after a leaked draft of the agreement was published online by an advisor to the Malaita Provincial Government Premier Daniel Suidani.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's announcement of military support for Ukraine is highly symbolic.
The support package includes a donation of $5 million to NATO's trust fund - to spend on supplies such as fuel and food for soldiers - as well as 1066 body armour plates, 473 helmets and 571 camouflage vests.

Households are spending an extra $3000 a year on essentials as the cost of living skyrockets, according to research by the New Zealand Initiative.
Its report, The rising cost of living for Kiwis, released on Thursday, said a third of the increase in living costs was due to higher transport costs, driven by higher prices at the petrol pump.
