The highly contagious Delta variant has crossed the ditch, with a confirmed case traveling to Wellington over the weekend.

The passenger flew out of Sydney on Friday night on QF163, bound for Wellington, and returned Monday morning on flight NZ247.

Quarantine-free travel between New South Wales and New Zealand will pause while the source of infection of new cases announced in Sydney is investigated.

Ten new community cases of COVID-19 were announced on Tuesday in NSW, taking the Australian state's recent community cases linked to the cluster to 21.

I welcome the renewed interest in the potential “lab-leak” origins of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. It wouldn’t be the first time an infectious pathogen was accidentally released from a research laboratory.
