An elderly man who fell over in a public toilet in Christchurch had his phone stolen after calling out for help. 

On Saturday, 92-year-old Gordon Proctor fell over in the toilet in the suburb of New Brighton, Star News reports.

Transport Agency emails reveal a flurry of activity by officials anxious to avoid embarrassment and blame after problems emerged with cameras installed in taxis.

The emails from 2014 show staff were worried a type of camera installed in hundreds of taxis around the country - the Lintek TaxiTrekT1 - could be faulty because some of the footage could not be downloaded.

Police admit destroying items gathered during the Pike River investigation but say the items held "no value".

Some Pike families are demanding answers as to why police destroyed the evidence from the Pike River mine in 2015. 

Detective Superintendent Peter Read said some items gathered during the Pike River investigation that were assessed to hold no evidential value were destroyed.

Ten people in French Polynesia have been given jail sentences of up to seven years over a racket with child prostitution sex and drug dealing.

The criminal court gave a seven-year prison term to a former teacher Sabine Biorot who was identified as the central figure procuring children who were given methamphetamine.
