There is a huge difference between friends and allies and partners and it is not all to do with defence. You have to add in history, trade, tourism, and other governmental ties etc. People tend to think when you say ally that you instantly mean defence.

While I am not agreeing or disagreeing with his statement I understand where he is coming from.

The New Zealand Defence Force turned down an opportunity to buy additional helicopters from Australia due to the “challenging and costly” task of adapting them, not because of personnel shortages, the military says.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) is reportedly considering a move to axe its eight-strong fleet of SH-2G(I) Super Seasprite multi-role maritime helicopters as part of a 6.5% cut in defence spending – equivalent to NZ$150m (US$91.23m) – that has been requested by the New Zealand government.
