OPINION: When Covid-19 forced New Zealand to shut its borders, it left refugees we had committed to resettle in precarious circumstances with shattered hopes.

The latest United Nation figures put people forcibly displaced by conflict at nearly 80 million – a near doubling from 10 years ago. Each minute of every day last year, 21 people were separated from their friends, family and communities because of who they are or what they believe.

Note from Nighthawk.NZ:

No no no... Sorry but we have a housing crisis at the moment. What is the point in bringing in more refuges from around the world if we can't house them properly. We already can't house kiwi's that live here.

Sort the housing crisis out first and then look at the numbers. Look after the people that are already here before expanding on those numbers.

ACT leader David Seymour is sceptical about what one economist has described as a "positive surprise" increase in New Zealand's gross domestic product (GDP).

GDP is calculated by comparing what the Government owes with what it produces. Figures released on Thursday show it increased 1.6 percent in the first three months of this year.

The Reserve Bank is looking to restrict lending to house buyers whose debts outstrip their income - a tool known as debt-to-income (DTI) ratio limits.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson has agreed "in principle" to allow DTIs, which the Reserve Bank has described as "likely to be the most effective additional tool" to help stabilise ballooning house prices.

So now it will only be investors that buy houses, increasing the price of the housing market and not those that are needing the house in the first place... right!
