Health professionals and academics have welcomed the Government's move to almost shut New Zealand's borders, as the coronavirus pandemic worsens around the world. 

More than 156,000 people have now been confirmed to have the disease, caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2, and more than 5800 have been killed.

A passenger on a cruise ship in Akaroa, Canterbury, is being tested for coronavirus.

Passengers on board the Golden Princess are not being allowed off the ship which arrived in Akaroa Harbour on Sunday morning.

New Zealand has its eighth confirmed case of coronavirus, the Ministry of Health confirms.

The eighth case a woman in her 30s from Denmark travelling in New Zealand, the Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said.

The Warehouse CEO has announced the company is limiting some items from this week amid coronavirus panic buying.

CEO Pejman Okhovat announced the changes in an email to customers at 12:30pm on Friday where he said they were seeing a very high demand for some items and wanted to have enough stock for all customers.

A rumoured suspected case of coronavirus in Wellington is partly to blame for the last-minute cancellation of a mosque open day in the city.

Mayor Andy Foster refused to confirm there was a suspected case in the capital and would only say there had been other suspected cases that turned out to be false alarms.
