Over the past two years, China has punished Canada and Australia for actions that the Chinese deem objectionable - and in response, both countries have faced unjust detentions of their citizens and sudden, harsh trade barriers.

Yet these two members of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance — which also includes the United Kingdom, the United States and New Zealand — have responded differently. That's evident in the recent launch of the Australia/U.K./U.S. security pact called AUKUS, from which Canada is conspicuously absent.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the new security pact involving Australia, the United States and Britain would not change New Zealand's security arrangement with the three countries.

New Zealand has been left out of the new tripartite security pact among traditional friends, which is aimed at focusing efforts to respond to China's rapid military expansion in the Asia Pacific.

In the wake of last week’s AUKUS announcement, decisions around what to replace New Zealand’s Anzac class frigates with have become immediately more important, writes Dr Wayne Mapp.

Many readers will know that most of my Line of Defence articles this year have referred to the need to renew the naval fleet, most notably the Anzac frigates. I have been postulating that an all OPV fleet might be the answer, predicated on the basis that our prime interest is the South West Pacific, from Antarctica to the Equator. In particular I have mentioned the ice capable Harry DeWolf as a credible option.

Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta says the government has no interest in AUKUS, a pact between Australia, the UK and the US seeking to improve their military capabilities.

“That’s not something that New Zealand wants to be a part of. It doesn't exclude us from joining with those particular countries in other areas, as we continue to do for security and intelligence purposes,” said Mahuta.
