An Afghani man trying to get a visa to come to New Zealand has reportedly been killed by the Taliban.

Community Law chief executive Sue Moroney says the man was a part of a group of 70 people waiting for a court hearing about the processing of their visas.

The US has tested an air-breathing hypersonic weapon capable of speeds faster than five times the speed of sound, marking the first successful test of the class of weapon since 2013, the Pentagon said on Monday.

Testing took place as the US and its global rivals quicken their pace to build hypersonic weapons - the next generation of arms that rob adversaries of reaction time and traditional defeat mechanisms.

OPINION: The return of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou to Shenzhen did not quite live up to the theatrical possibilities of the occasion. It was night-time in Shenzhen under pandemic restrictions. So there were no hordes of beaming children, waving paper flowers and chanting a warm welcome. Red flags fluttering were unseen, though there was a red carpet. Instead, she received a bouquet of flowers from an adult in full PPE regalia while beaming local officials stood well back.
