A state of emergency has been declared in Southland as extensive flooding causes significant problems across the region.
Southland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group chair Neville Cook declared the state of emergency for the region on Tuesday afternoon, including Gore, following Monday's declaration for Milford Sound, where 195 tourists remained trapped.

A new survey has suggested that New Zealanders' perception of the environment has changed over time.
The Public Perceptions of New Zealand's Environment online survey released by Lincoln University was completed by 2000 people and looked at what people think about the state of the environment.

National Party leader Simon Bridges believes it's "concerning" the China consul general made comments about the Government's decision to bar foreigners travelling from China for fear of spreading the coronavirus.
The Government announced on Sunday that any foreign travellers who leave or transit through China will be refused entry to New Zealand.
