Public health staff will begin meeting flights from China from Monday as the coronavirus threat grows.

The move comes after criticism from National Party health spokesman Michael Woodhouse, who said the Government wasn't doing enough to detect it at Auckland International Airport.

An expert advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO) has described the coronavirus outbreak as potentially "thermonuclear pandemic level bad".

Dozens have been killed by the virus 2019-nCoV since it was first detected in early December, and as of Sunday morning (NZ time) there were 1441 confirmed cases.

New Zealand's Ministry of Health is stressing the risk to Kiwis from the case of coronavirus confirmed in Australia is "very low".

On Saturday, Australian authorities confirmed a Chinese National in Melbourne was infected with the mystery illness that has so far killed at least 41 and infected nearly 1300.
