Jim Rolfe’s has two main requirements. One is a comprehensive perspective – inclusive of international and domestic security challenges, inclusive of the many agencies that are part of an expanding national security community, and inclusive of the many building blocks which are already out there in existing documentation. The other is what Jim calls “overall coherence”. It’s the job of the national security strategy to connect the dots, providing guidance to agencies as they work together. An NSS for New Zealand would provide the big picture, the meta-narrative, for this collaborative effort.

New Zealand is the only Five Eyes partner without an explicit national security strategy document (although technically Canada calls their version a national security policy). Clearly our closest partners believe that some form of overarching direction is useful for determining the activities of individual agencies.

Defence Minister Ron Mark is downplaying a rocket attack near Camp Taji in Iraq as the Defence Force confirms no Kiwis were harmed.

Katyusha rockets hit roughly 3km away from the military complex - located north of Baghdad and which also hosts American forces - on Wednesday morning in an attack which local media described as "fierce". Initial reports suggested the rockets landed on the base itself.

Investors from Australia, Canada and the UK that meet certain criteria will be exempted from some new US restrictions on foreign investment - but New Zealand didn't make the cut.

The three countries have been added to an 'excepted states' list and may face different compliance requirements to revised US investment regulations released this week.

If any nation or organisation places people in harm’s way as part of their role, then there is an obligation to provide the best protection possible – relevant and appropriate to the task and risk. Striking the balance between force protection and becoming disconnected from the public, however, requires great wisdom and acceptance of risk.

A host of Australia's The Project television show was pushed back by other hosts when he went off on a rant about Jacinda Ardern's recent holiday to Queensland.

Those that know me, know I am not a big fan of Jacinda Ardern... however she is allowed a holiday, even if it is in Aussie it can be where ever she wants to visit. The problem with Scott Morrison is that he tried to hide that he went on holiday when there was a state emergency... New Zealand is not under any state emergency at present... so she is spending money and promoting tourism in Queensland... isn't that what you want...
