A horrifying video of the Taliban carrying out an execution of an Afghan police chief is in direct conflict with their promise to keep the peace and not seek retribution.

Haji Mullah Achakzai, who served in the Afghan Armed Forces, was employed as the police chief of the Badghis province near the city of Herat when he was captured by the Taliban.

The first New Zealanders have been evacuated from Kabul’s international airport, and four Defence Force soldiers are on the ground in Afghanistan.

The Government’s mercy mission to rescue an increasing tally of New Zealand citizens – 161 as of Friday – and Afghan allies in Afghanistan has yet begin in earnest. But one New Zealand family had been evacuated by a “partner government” to Europe, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed.

The Defence Force already has four personnel on the ground in Afghanistan's capital Kabul, who will help to establish a New Zealand presence at the airport and begin evacuations. 

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced plans on Monday to send a C-130 Defence Force plane to the Middle East to bring back an estimated 53 Kiwis and 37 Afghan nationals who have assisted New Zealand, along with their families.

Authorities across the Tasman have discovered video of the Christchurch terror attack continues to be downloaded by dozens of Australians. 

A counter-terrorism probe by the Australian Federal Police found that almost three quarters of the most popular extremist content being shared online was classified as extreme right-wing, and most of it was linked to the 2019 attack on mosques in New Zealand.
