The deadly coronavirus COVID-19 could claim more than 14,000 New Zealanders' lives if intensive efforts to eradicate it fail, new research warns.

The Otago University research, co-authored by Professor Nick Wilson and provided to the Ministry of Health, suggests if efforts to eliminate the virus from New Zealand fail, there could be dire consequences for the country.

New Zealanders living in Australia will have access to the government's $12 billion wage subsidy scheme, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced.

The scheme will apply to Kiwis on 'special category visas' or '444 visas'.

Viral social media posts and some tabloid media outlets have purported that the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has mutated and is causing a range of new symptoms.

The posts, some of which have been marked as false by Facebook's fake news filter, provide a full list of 'expanded' symptoms of the disease beyond those issued by the World Health Organisation such as fever, dry coughing and tiredness.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) contribution to the successful mission to train members of the Iraqi Security Forces to combat ISIS is at an end and the first troops from the final contingent have arrived home.

Since December the NZDF has had 45 personnel in Camp Taji at the joint Building Partner Capacity mission with the Australians.

New Zealand has 76 new cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), bringing the total of confirmed and probable cases to 589.

The latest figures were announced by the Ministry of Health's Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield during a press conference on Monday.

New Zealand has recorded its first death from the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19. 

The case was reported by health officials on Sunday afternoon.

She was a West Coast woman in her 70s.

Online shopping might be a preferred pastime for many New Zealanders, but buying and selling on digital marketplaces could come at a cost amid the country's COVID-19 crisis. 

While New Zealand's largest online auction website, Trade Me, has effectively shut up shop for the duration of the four-week lockdown, Facebook Marketplace is still open for business - meaning sellers could be breaking lockdown protocol by trading in-person.
