Police say they have tracked a series of vehicle break-ins over the last few weeks to a group of young people.

They have been talking to a small group in relation to several vehicle break-ins. Inspector James Ure, of Dunedin, said that these happened "within Dunedin environs."

The group has been dealt with via the Youth Aid system and is in the hands of Oranga Tamariki.

Police have also reassured the public that the run of break-ins has ended.

After a recent spate of tools being stolen from vehicles, police have also issued prevention advice to not leave tools in vehicles parked overnight and to secure vehicles properly.

Tools are a "highly sought-after commodity",  Insp Ure said.
