A shocking new video has emerged appearing to show a group of heavily armed Taliban soldiers surrounding an Afghan television presenter as he says "the Afghan people should not to be afraid".

Afghan-born Australian BBC journalist Yalda Hakim shared the footage from Afghan TV network Peace Studio on Monday.

It shows the host reading a statement from a laptop while a group of several soldiers armed with large guns stand behind him.

"Afghanistan TV - surreal," Hakim tweeted.

"This is what a political debate now looks like on Afghan TV, Taliban foot soldiers watching over the host. The presenter talks about the collapse of the Ghani govt & the Islamic Emirate says the Afghan people should not to be afraid."

Social media users said the TV host looked "terrified" during the show and said they believed he was reading a statement from the Taliban.

BBC journalist Kian Sharifi shared that the incident took place on a programme called Pardaz and shared a longer version of the footage.

"In this longer video, the presenter interviews a Taliban fighter who presumably outranks the rest of the lot in the studio. The presenter switches from Dari to Pashto, which unfortunately I don't speak."

This comes as the United States confirmed it has completed it's withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.

More than 122,000 people have been flown out of Kabul since August 14, the day before the Taliban regained control of the country.
