A man allegedly involved in a shooting that saw a taxi driver injured, has been arrested after trying to evade a police checkpoint in Hamilton.
The arrest comes after a public appeal for information on Friday.
The shooting happened on September 1, after Rotorua police approached a vehicle that had been stolen in Hamilton, sparking a chase which was later abandoned by police.
Later, the vehicle was found around the intersection of Te Ngae and Isles roads, when the police approached.
"The passenger got out and discharged a firearm twice at police, injuring a nearby motorist," a police spokesperson said.
"The driver then fled in the vehicle, and the man who had discharged the firearm stole another car at gunpoint."
That man then stole a third vehicle, again at gunpoint, before being stopped by police and taken into custody.
But after failing to locate the driver, police issued an appeal for information.
A 25-year-old man, sought in relation to the incident, was arrested in Hamilton overnight after trying to evade a police checkpoint.
He's been charged with failing to stop for police and has been remanded in custody, a police statement said.
He will appear in Whakatāne District Court on September 18.
