A doctor who appears in a viral social media post claiming doctors have found the COVID-19 vaccine works best for men if it's injected directly into the penis has labelled it a "work of mischief".
The post, which has been circulating on Facebook since the new year, is clearly fake - but it's fooled many people, including some here in New Zealand, where it's been spread by pages set up by supporters of outgoing US President Donald Trump.

Hong Kong police arrested 53 opposition activists and former legislators Wednesday morning, accusing them of "subverting state power." The arrested leaders had been involved in organizing or attending a democratic primary last July, ahead of the fall Legislative Council elections. (Though the full elections were eventually postponed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 600,000 people voted in the primary.)

Green MP Golriz Ghahraman has been accused of spreading a "disgusting centuries-old anti-Semitic trope" after sharing a social media post accusing Israeli authorities of "medical apartheid" in the fight against COVID-19.
Earlier this week activist group Jewish Voice For Peace shared an edited screenshot of a New York Times article. It originally read, 'How Israel Became a World Leader in Vaccinating Against COVID-19', but the group "fixed it for them" by crossing out 'Vaccinating Against COVID-19' and replacing it with 'MEDICAL APARTHEID' in bright red letters.

Facebook will bar US President Donald Trump from posting on its system at least until the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, the platform said Thursday (Friday morning, NZT).
In a post announcing the unprecedented move, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said the risk of allowing Trump to use the platform is too great following the president's incitement of a mob that touched off a deadly riot in the US Capitol on Wednesday (local time).

Kiwis are being warned if there was an outbreak of the UK strain of coronavirus in Auckland, a repeat of August's level 3 lockdown probably wouldn't be sufficient to contain it.
The B.1.1.7 variant - estimated to be at least 50 percent more infectious than others - is behind the UK's devastating third wave of COVID-19. It's put the country back into lockdown, with the daily death toll back above 1000 for the first time since April.
