The Department of Defence has confirmed that it is currently exploring the possibility of purchasing two New Zealand navy ships to be used for fisheries protection duties in the Irish Sea.

The Irish Examiner understands that the ships are 'Lake Class' 55 m (180ft) inshore patrol vessels.

A critically ill Niuean MP has been flown to New Zealand at the request of its government.

They were flown by the Royal New Zealand Air Force on Thursday after a medical emergency prompted the evacuation.

According to TV Niue, the patient is MP Richard Hipa.

The Defence Force's (NZDF) ability to respond to a major disaster has been significantly compromised, mainly due to its security role at managed isolation hotels.

Top-ranking officials have warned that with more than 1000 troops at any one time staffing MIQ and quarantine, or preparing to go, it would not be able to respond at the same scale and speed as in the past.

The Ministry of Health has been forced to assure New Zealanders there is no merit to rumours circulating that the country is about to head into a COVID-19 lockdown.

In a late-night post to Facebook on Thursday, the ministry stated Healthline was "reporting many rumours relating to COVID-19 and lockdowns circulating".

The Government will reconsider its refusal to help Afghans who worked alongside the New Zealand Defence Force, as Taliban militants swiftly claim territory and threaten their lives.

A group of 38 Afghans who worked as tractor drivers, labourers, cleaners, and cooks for the Defence Force, have been pleading with the Government to be allowed into New Zealand. The group is increasingly fearful they will be targeted because they worked for a foreign military force, as the Taliban claim provinces close to Bamiyan, where New Zealand soldiers served.

A patient in critical condition from Niue was medically evacuated by the New Zealand Defence Force on Thursday.

A Ministry of Health spokeswoman confirmed that the patient does not have Covid-19.

A majority of New Zealanders say they oppose “killer robots”, or autonomous weapons, being used in conflict, making the country among the most concerned in the world.

As the Government considers its policy on autonomous weapons and pushes for international rules around their use, a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) shows there little knowledge of, but some concern about, so-called “killer robots” among the public.
