New Zealand has joined an international statement on the situation in Afghanistan, calling on the Taliban to allow Afghans and other citizens to depart if they wish.

"Given the deteriorating security situation, we support, are working to secure, and call on all parties to respect and facilitate, the safe and orderly departure of foreign nationals and Afghans who wish to leave the country," the joint statement reads.

Just months after we ended our 20-year deployment to Afghanistan, New Zealand is redeploying troops - a mercy mission to bring home Kiwis and resettle Afghan nationals who worked for our Government.

Hundreds of Afghans and their families could be resettled in New Zealand, and our elite SAS troops could be tasked with keeping the operation safe.

The Government has promised to resettle more than 37 Afghan nationals who claim to have worked with New Zealand forces, and a C130 Hercules transport plane will soon head to Afghanistan to assist with the evacuation of foreign citizens.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday said that Cabinet had made the decision to deploy the Air Force asset to aid the international evacuation effort, and an “in principle” decision to provide residence to Afghan allies who have been lobbying the Government for help.

The Taliban has arrived in Kabul on a charm offensive, promising no bloodshed - but it still has a hit list, says a Kiwi journalist stationed in the Afghanistan capital.

Charlotte Bellis is in Kabul working as a journalist for Al Jazeera, and told The AM Show the Taliban's arrival on Monday was "surprisingly friendly".

ormer Prime Minister Helen Clark, who sent troops to Afghanistan in 2001, says a “massive intelligence failure” led New Zealand and allied governments to completely underestimate the Taliban’s strength.

The Taliban seized control of Afghanistan on Sunday, bringing to an end a two-decade effort by the United States and a consortium of allies, including New Zealand, to build a prosperous democratic nation.

New Zealand is sending in the Defence Force to help dozens of Kiwis and Afghan allies stranded in Afghanistan escape following the Taliban's rapid takeover of capital city Kabul.

At her post-Cabinet press conference from the Beehive on Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the Government was aware of 53 Kiwis who are still there and seeking to get out, with plans now underway to repatriate them.

The territory controlled by the crumbling Afghan government shrank to little more than Kabul on Sunday as the Taliban took the key eastern city of Jalalabad without a fight, while the United States sent more troops to help evacuate its civilians.

The fall of the last major city outside the capital secured for the insurgents the roads connecting Afghanistan to Pakistan, a western official said.
