The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) will officially retire the first of its Lockheed C-130H Hercules tactical transport aircraft this week.

Located at Base Auckland the RNZAF’s No. 40 Squadron, which operates a fleet of five C-130H aircraft, will hold a ceremony to mark to occasion on 12 February and a Squadron retirement function in the hangar the day before.

The Royal New Zealand Navy’s maritime sustainment vessel, HMNZS Aotearoa, has sailed today from Auckland bound for South East Asia to participate in the Five Power Defence Arrangements Exercise Bersama Lima in Malaysia, alongside frigate HMNZS Te Mana.

The last aircraft to join the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s latest fleet has hit the tarmac in Ōhakea.

All four Boeing P-8A Poseidon were lined up at the base on Friday marking the final chapter in what has been a five-year journey to bring the planes to New Zealand.

The assault, capture and subsequent withdrawal from Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli between 6 and 10 August 1915 is established as a milestone in New Zealand history. Kiwi troops briefly held the heights on 8 August. The carnage numbed the country. Anzac Day was established a year later.
